Matapedia Atlantic Salmon
Bespoke Flyfishing
at Tobique Salmon Club
with host Jeff Bright

SOME OF THE LARGEST ATLANTIC SALMON in North America return to the famous Restigouche River dividing New Brunswick and Quebec. The biggest and brightest enter the river in their prime on higher water in the weeks of late May and early June, many taking a right turn into the storied Matapedia River, the system's largest tributary. Salmon anglers from the world over come here to try for a shot at these highly desirable early fish. Like early-running summer steelhead or early spring chinook from the Pacific, these special Atlantic fish are in a class of their own — among the planet's most spectacular salmon ... In his book Atlantic Salmon Magic Topher Browne says of the Matapedia’s fish, “ Matapedia salmon are deep, full-bodied fish. Their fighting characteristics are matched by few strains of salmon in North America … Early-season salmon bound for the Causapscal, the major tributary of the Matapedia, are among the strongest salmon that swim.”

Warning: This is not a number’s game. Each salmon encountered here is special. Being but 25 kilometers from the salt, they are extremely fit, platinum bright, and often carrying sea lice. A salmon hooked in the early run will likely be 25 pounds or larger. You'll want to make every chance count!

Tobique Salmon Club

Tobique is a classic and historic salmon club — a warm, traditional log-built camp, overlooking an excellent home pool. The grounds are well maintained with white birches and a lawn leading down to the river. The accommodations include four bedrooms with new en suite bathrooms. The main lodge is comfortable and cozy with a fireplace and fishing memorabilia on the walls, as well as a covered porch where you can tie flies and enjoy a cocktail. The food is good, hearty lodge cuisine ... Situated on the banks of the lower Matapedia, the first major tributary to the Restigouche, TSC has exclusive access to eleven private pools — considered the best early-season water on the entire river. In all aspects, Tobique is optimally positioned and outfitted for anglers to target the prized salmon of the Causapacal run.
